JD Power 2026 IQS: A Compact Kia Finishes Second in the Country
The K4 ranks second highest in initial quality across the industry, and the Rogue tops its segment for the first time.
Kia and Nissan each posted segment wins in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study, the automakers said, citing results from the research firm. Kia said the 2026 Carnival finished No. 1 in the Minivan segment and the K4 finished No. 1 in the Compact Car segment, and that the K4 was the second highest ranked vehicle in initial quality overall across the industry. Nissan said the Rogue finished No. 1 in the Compact SUV segment, the first time the model has topped its IQS segment, and that Nissan ranked second among mass-market brands.
The second-best-built new vehicle in America this year, by this study, is a compact Kia. Not a flagship, not a $99,995 truck. A K4, the second highest ranked vehicle in initial quality overall across the industry. The quality conversation has moved to the bottom of the price sheet, where the buyers who used to settle now take delivery of some of the cleanest-assembled cars on the road. That is not a downgrade. That is the future of the compact car arriving early.
For years I told this room that mass-market quality was a decade behind the premium badges. Put it on the record that I was wrong about the gap. The Rogue is No. 1 in the Compact SUV segment, the largest in the country by Nissan's own count, and the Carnival owns the minivans outright. That is the floor rising. I will eat the measured portion of crow this earns and swallow it. It does not make a Carnival sing to me. It does make it built right. Different sentences. I meant both.
Everyone will read the Gold Plant Quality Award as a crown. It is not. Per JD Power, a plant award honors building vehicles with the fewest defects in early ownership, excluding design problems. So the Kia plant in Nuevo Leon assembled the K4 cleanly, with discipline and almost nothing rattling loose, and that is genuinely worth saluting. But a clean line tells you the thing was built well. It does not tell you the thing was beautifully made. Those are two different virtues. Kia earned the first one. Honor it for exactly that.
