BMW Completes $1.7 Billion South Carolina Investment, Adds Woodruff Battery Plant
The company marked the milestone at Plant Spartanburg, where it premiered the fifth-generation X5; a U.S.-built iX5 is due before year-end.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. BMW Group said Tuesday it has completed a $1.7 billion investment in its South Carolina operations, finishing the expansion of Plant Spartanburg and the construction of the new Plant Woodruff battery plant.
The company marked the completion at its "Home of X" event at Plant Spartanburg, where it held the world premiere of the all-new, fifth-generation BMW X5, BMW said.
BMW said the BMW iX5 will be the first fully electric BMW assembled in the United States, with production scheduled to begin at Plant Spartanburg before the end of 2026. The two plants together will support the assembly of BMW X models and fully electric vehicles in the state, the company said.
More than 7.3 million BMW vehicles have been assembled in South Carolina since 1994, according to BMW. The company said 412,799 X models were assembled at Plant Spartanburg in 2025, the seventh time the plant has exceeded 400,000 units.
BMW said its U.S. operations support more than 120,000 jobs nationwide and contribute more than $43.3 billion annually to the U.S. economy. Those are the company's own figures.
Pricing, drivetrain outputs and on-sale timing for the new X5 were not disclosed.
