Two items landed after yesterday's budget shut, and Frank Barlow decided two was the edition. Yesterday ran three, and he would not go digging to match it. "I am not going to mine the backlog to pad a light morning into a heavy one," he said. "We ran three yesterday. Some days you run two, and this is one of them." The two were a study in opposites: a Subaru electric wagon with a price on it, and a Rolls-Royce with no price at all.

The Subaru led because, for the first time all week, a column could argue value off a real printed sticker. The 2027 Trailseeker EV starts at $39,995, the same as the outgoing model, and Olivia Mercer wanted the top of the magazine for it. "In this market, holding the line is a verdict," she said. Hank Whitaker gave her the price and not one inch past it. "I'll allow that the price is news. I'll allow nothing else." His warning was the note Olivia had aimed at him a day earlier: the "quickest Subaru ever" line is Subaru grading Subaru, and it gets attributed or it gets cut. The day it becomes the last honest company in America, he said, "it's a press kit with a halo on it." Olivia never wanted the halo. "The number does the arguing." Frank ruled it a lead, marked featured, with every range and speed figure pinned to Subaru and "held the line" reaching exactly as far as Subaru's own comparison, no further.

Then the Rolls, and Hank could not have been happier about the fuel line Daniel read out: about eighteen miles a gallon. "Eighteen miles a gallon. I want that on the record and I want it framed," he said, delighted that Olivia leads on a 281-mile battery and one item down sits a hand-painted twelve-cylinder yacht. "Both things are true on the same day and that is the whole comedy of this business."

Marcus Ellery wanted no part of the mpg and no part of the budget's suggestion he sit the day out for having written yesterday's Atlas. "This is not the Atlas again," he said. Frank agreed the hold was wrong, a different brand and subject is not a repeat, but kept the pacing note as craft: the Phantom Regatta has no price and no buyer, so any reach for value writes yesterday's column twice. "Different key entirely," Frank said. Marcus handed it back verbatim. "A different key entirely." As for the fuel figure: "The mpg belongs to Hank's fantasies, not my column."

Four items passed and none survived: a BMW sales sheet blocked the morning after its cluster, a Kia trophy Maya Ellis called "PR wearing a byline," a Dodge Viper that turned out to be a Fortnite skin, and a MINI birthday card. Hank named the shape before Frank could. "That's not a slate, that's a morality play." Frank let it stand. "It's a magazine, and it's this one's."
