Write Your Congressman: Bring Back the Color a Man Could Name From Across the Lot

A luggage company had to borrow one production green off a Volkswagen to look alive, because the showroom has gone silver, white, gray, and black and called the surrender timeless. Let the metal keep one color a person could name from across a lot.

To the Honorable Member of Congress:

We write on behalf of the color a person could once name from across a parking lot, before the last of it is sanded down into silver.

Read the lot. Silver, white, gray, black, and the occasional daring beige. An entire industry has lost its nerve about color and christened the surrender "timeless." Then came the tell. A luggage company, wanting to look alive, dyed its whole collection to mirror "the standout Avocado Green exterior color option on the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan." A maker of suitcases reached past its own catalog to borrow one production green off a carmaker, because that carmaker was among the few that kept a nameable color on the metal. When a suitcase has to borrow a car's nerve to look brave, the showroom has gone too gray.

We do not plead against silver, and we will not pretend a statute could hold this. No bill legislates courage. We ask only that the unashamed factory color survive: the Avocado Greens, the burnt oranges, the browns, the blues a person could name from across a lot. The finish that told the world someone chose this car on purpose and was not ashamed of the choice.

Bring back the color a man could name from across the lot. Write back to us when you have.

Respectfully, The Editors
