Toyota to Invest $3.6 Billion for Second San Antonio Line, Adding Tacoma Production
The expansion adds 2,000 jobs and 2.5 million square feet, doubling the campus by 2030, as Tacoma output shifts from Baja California over about four years.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Toyota Motor North America said it will invest $3.6 billion to add a second vehicle assembly line at its San Antonio plant, dedicated to the Tacoma pickup, the company announced July 6.
The expansion will add 2.5 million square feet to the plant, known as Toyota Texas, doubling the campus by 2030, and will create 2,000 new jobs, Toyota said.
Toyota said it will transition Tacoma production from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Baja California to the expanded San Antonio plant over an approximate four-year period. The Tundra and Sequoia are already assembled there, and with the addition of the Tacoma, all three will be built in Texas, the company said.
The investment brings Toyota's total spending in San Antonio to $8.3 billion since it broke ground in 2003, according to the company. Toyota said its local workforce will grow to about 6,000.
State and local officials, including Texas Gov. Abbott, welcomed the announcement. The investment, jobs and square-footage figures are Toyota's own.
Toyota did not say when a Texas-built Tacoma would reach dealers, and it did not release a model year for the truck.
