The Mercedes Supercomputer Now Rents You Back the Smart Half. Retire the Word Owner.

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS reaches U.S. dealerships in the second half of this year. Grant every kilometer of it. Mercedes rates the EQS 450+ at 925 kilometers of range on its own preliminary WLTP figure. It rides on a new 800-volt architecture and takes DC fast charging up to 350 kW. It offers what Mercedes calls the first steer-by-wire system from a German automaker in series production, and runs on a "supercomputer" the company says thinks with artificial intelligence. Then a third of the release turns into a store.

The parking assist, the reverse function that retraces your path, the navigation that plans around a mountain pass: Mercedes files all of it under Digital Extras. The fine print says that after a "limited runtime," they "can be extended for a fee" in the Mercedes-Benz Store. The tell: you do not buy the smart half of an EQS. You lease it back, monthly, from a shop inside the car you already financed. The word "owner" no longer fits anyone in that deal. I have retired it.

Picture the neighbor who just signed for one. The reverse function backs him out the way he drove in, until a runtime lapses on a Tuesday. The memory goes dark, and a machine that thinks with the collective knowledge of the internet cannot recall the driveway it left until he opens an app and pays.

Mercedes will call this personalization. The fine print calls it a paired Mercedes me account, an active data plan, and a fee. Ownership was never a feeling you had about a car. It is a subscription, and subscriptions lapse.

So the ceremony is set, without heat. Effective the day the store opened inside the dashboard, the word "owner" is taken out of service. The Deputy Registrar of the Mercedes-Benz Store reads the replacement into the record: account holder, in good standing, pending renewal. The old word is thanked for its long service and shelved. It is survived by the monthly fee, the paired account, and the active data plan, which continue.
