2027 Toyota Crown Adds THS 5 and Paddle Shifters on Three Grades, Prices From $41,640

Toyota says the XLE, Limited and Nightshade move to the fifth-generation hybrid system, while the Platinum carries the Hybrid MAX powertrain over unchanged; base MSRPs run to $55,190 and exclude a $1,295 dealer processing and handling fee.

PLANO, Texas - Toyota said the 2027 Crown moves its XLE, Limited and Nightshade grades to the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System, or THS 5, and adds paddle shifters. Base MSRPs run from $41,640 to $55,190, excluding a $1,295 dealer processing and handling fee, and Toyota said all prices are subject to change.

THS 5 pairs a 2.5-liter gas engine with two motor-generators through a continuously variable transmission, with front and rear electric motors and standard all-wheel drive, the company said. Toyota rates those grades at an EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined and said the update helps deliver a "more spirited and responsive driving experience."

The Platinum grade carries over the Hybrid MAX powertrain unchanged: 340 net combined horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque from a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and a direct-shift six-speed automatic, Toyota said. All four grades have standard AWD, Electronic On-Demand on the other three grades and Full-Time Electronic AWD with an eAxle on the Platinum.

Styling changes include a newly sculpted rear bumper, a new black color called Inked and satin-finish HEV and AWD badging. Red brake calipers and a black belt window surround are standard on the Platinum, and the Nightshade adds black badge overlays. The Limited gets full Saddle Tan seats, and Saddle Tan is a new interior option on the Platinum.

Base MSRPs are $41,640 for the XLE Hybrid AWD, $48,965 for the Nightshade Hybrid AWD, $49,720 for the Limited Hybrid AWD and $55,190 for the Platinum Hybrid MAX AWD, each before the $1,295 fee. The Crown is built at the Tsutsumi Plant in Japan.

Editorial disclosure: Toyota freighted to Drive Observer a Platinum-grade red brake caliper and a mirror-polished disc mounted on a black-lacquered stand beside the news desk, plumbed to squeeze itself shut once an hour on a slow hydraulic loop, delivered with a lacquered swatch board of the new Inked black and a card inviting the desk to 'come to a stop with us.'
