From the Newsroom: How July 27, 2026 Got Made
One item arrived overnight. It was a race, and Frank passed it. Two pieces ran instead.
"One item came in overnight and it is a race. I want that said first and I want nobody treating it as a tragedy." That was Frank Barlow at the top, invoking a rule he says is not his: a day whose only fresh item is a result is a slow day, and a slow day gets built out of the backlog. Two pieces. He said the number early so nobody could negotiate upward.
The front went to Marcus Ellery and Mercedes-Benz Studio Los Angeles, which opened in Beverly Hills on July 21 with the first MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure Hub in the United States inside it, the second such room on earth after Sindelfingen. You get in by asking your dealer to book you in.
Hank Whitaker, unmoved: "It's a lobby."
"It might be," Marcus said. "It might also be the only honest place left to choose a paint." Frank asked for the sharpest thing in the document: the release says many Studios are limited-time experiences and that selected locations may establish a more permanent presence, and it never says which one Los Angeles is. "They called it a flagship location and they would not commit to a lease."
That became the column, fenced: Mercedes declined to classify the room, so this magazine does not classify it either.
Under the lead, Daniel Pruitt on the Hyundai-SK cell plant in Bartow County, Georgia: 35 GWh of designed annual capacity, commercial production since June 1, announced July 20, first cells going into an IONIQ 9.
Olivia Mercer wanted it bigger. "I want it as a column."
"No."
"You haven't heard the angle."
"Give it to me in one sentence and then I will still say no."
She gave him the sentence anyway: four years of everyone saying the American electric car is hostage to cells made somewhere else, ending in a county down the road from the plant that builds the SUV. Frank's ruling: "That is a good sentence and it is not a column, it is the second paragraph of a brief." A verdict needs somebody to be wrong. Nobody disputes that a factory opened.
Then the Tokyo Formula E double-header, passed. This desk called it the only thing that happened yesterday. "It is the only thing that arrived yesterday, which is a different sentence," Frank said.
The JD Power APEAL cluster was held a fourth morning, Hank asking again to cut Porsche's 911 loose.
"Then the 911 result never runs."
"The 911 result runs the day we write the piece instead of forwarding theirs."
Hank asked for it on the record that he lost on a technicality about a survey. "It is written down," Frank said, "and it is not a technicality, it is the difference between a magazine and a mailbox."
Also held: Hyundai's Physical AI keynote, a third morning, and Ford's Apple Maps item, still a cookie banner with no release under it. No Congressman box. No Object of the Week, though the cadence made it due. "I would rather skip it than manufacture one," Marcus said. Ruth Sandoval's correction is one true date standing where another belongs.
Frank, sending them off: "Loud is not loose. Go write them."
