A three-piece Sunday, a record sales month ruled to the electric desk on the argument rather than the fuel, and a racing slot unspent for a fifth edition.
Saturday produced no edition, and Frank Barlow declined to treat that as a wound. "It is Sunday, yesterday produced nothing, and I am not going to pretend that is a crisis." Four unrelated subjects were on the board and he wanted three pieces. "Nobody is going to talk me into four to make the page look busy."
Daniel Pruitt read Hyundai's July: 82,480 units, the best July in company history, hybrid sales up thirty-five percent, electrified vehicles at one-third of all retail sales. Then the model table underneath, printed without comment, in which every Hyundai with only a battery in it went backward, the Ioniq 6 to seventy-six cars.
Hank Whitaker moved first. "Seventy-six. A company sells eighty-two thousand cars in a month and seventy-six of them are that one. I will take this and I will be gentle, which is a thing I have never promised in this room before." Olivia Mercer did not concede the premise. "You will not be gentle and it is not yours." Hank: "It is about a hybrid winning. A hybrid has an engine in it."
Frank ruled it to Olivia, expressly as the mirror of his Friday call and not a reversal of it: that morning an electric crossover went to the combustion desk because its question was a performance question. "The section is named for what it argues about. That cuts both ways, and today it cuts the other way." Hank went quietly. "I would still like it minuted that the funeral was available and I was not permitted to attend."
Daniel asked whether he still had a brief. He did not. "One item, one piece," Frank said: a brief beneath the column would be the same document twice with the verdict sanded off the second one.
Kia's record July was on the wire and not on the budget. "It is not on the budget and it should have been, and I would rather say that out loud in this room than have it discovered in three weeks." It is banked, and no Kia figure enters the Hyundai column: "a comparison we have not reported is not context, it is an assertion."
Olivia wanted the Lucid Gravity's Norwegian range run. "You are not getting it and the reason is arithmetic, not merit," Frank said: she already had the front. Marcus Ellery made a case for the cabin and lost it, the subject being a distance, not an interior. It went to Daniel as a brief, with the June 4 date ordered into the first sentence: "a two-month-old result printed as this morning's news is a lie told by omission."
Acura's front-row lockout at Road America was held: a pole is not a result, and Acura's own release puts the race on television at 11:30 a.m. Eastern today. The racing slot goes unspent for a fifth consecutive edition. "It is a wire that keeps handing us cars."
No Object of the Week; it is not due. Marcus, for the record: "I have now lost an interior and an exhaust pipe in the same meeting." No Congressman box either: "a sales table, a video game livery and a Norwegian road trip are not civic causes."
