AMG Built a Car With No Engine and Recorded a Six. Canonize the Acousticians.
A drive program in the GT 53 4-Door Coupe plays an authentically reproduced combustion engine sound at the touch of a button. AMG captured that engine across 16 microphone positions on the road, and it is not in this car.
Mercedes-AMG built a car with no engine in it. Then it sent people out on the road to record one. Not sound effects. They used 16 microphone positions, inside the car and out, and performed more than 100 high-precision measurements, static and dynamic, on an AMG inline six that is not in this car.
Somebody in Affalterbach loved that engine enough to keep going back out on the road for it. I want their names. I want them thanked out loud by the company that built a car without it. Canonize the acousticians. All of them, down to whoever held the cable.
The hardware is serious. Mercedes says every figure is preliminary, uncertified and subject to deviation. Peak output is 536 hp. Continuous output is 362 hp. The table gives the boost a duration of 53 seconds. Good numbers. Not the argument.
The argument is a drive program called AMGFORCE Sport+, which plays what the release calls an authentically reproduced combustion engine sound, with simulated gear changes, at the touch of a button. The source is the inline six from the previous E 53 Coupe. Olivia will call the battery the interesting half. She would not cross a parking lot to hear an engine start.
Diane has spent 34 years listening to engines through a closed garage door. She knows which of the three cars I am under by the swearing. One of them has not made a noise since 2019, because a man in Ohio stopped answering about a carburetor. This car has a Sound Slider. Powerful, Balanced or Minimal. Six-cylinder sound, none of the mess. Diane would take it.
The acoustics specialists are the only honest people in this story. I am elevating them for it. Put their names in the owner's manual, ahead of the tire pressures. The executives who signed it off get nothing. No thanks. No plaque. They can find the names in the manual, same as you.
The VerdictMercedes-AMG announced the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe on Aug. 6, 2026, from Affalterbach. It is an entry model expanding the recently unveiled GT 4-Door Coupe family and is set to arrive at U.S. dealerships in early 2027. Arriving at a dealership is not being on sale, and this release carries no price of any kind. Mercedes-Benz states that the information is preliminary, that no confirmed values from an officially recognized testing organization, no EC type approval and no certificate of conformity are available, and that deviations from official figures are possible. Every figure here carries that character. Two electric motors, one at each axle, deliver a combined 536-hp peak output, 362-hp continuous output and 590 lb-ft of torque, and the technical table gives a boost duration of 53 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 143 mph. Drive is through AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with Torque Vectoring, the front motor acting as a boost motor that engages and disengages according to load, and through a two-speed transmission. The high-voltage battery has 106 kWh of usable capacity at 800 volts nominal. DC charging capacity is up to 600 kW at 800-volt stations, with automatic switching to 400-volt mode. AC charging capacity is 11 kW. DC charging from 10 to 80 percent state of charge takes 11 minutes. Range is 809-682 km (WLTP), and this desk does not convert a WLTP figure to miles. Curb weight is listed as TBA. The subject of this column is the AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program, which the release describes as producing an authentically reproduced combustion engine sound with simulated gear changes, inspired by the AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder powertrain in the previous (C238) Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupe. This car has no engine and the sound is simulated. AMG's acoustics specialists captured that engine's characteristics with 16 different microphone positions inside and outside the vehicle and performed more than 100 high-precision measurements, static and dynamic, on the road. Manual gear changes via the steering wheel paddles are possible in the drive program. The release does not say the paddles operate the two-speed transmission, and this column does not say it either. A Sound Slider lets a customer choose Powerful, Balanced or Minimal, combined with a scale from Classic to Futuristic. Stefan Weckbach, chairman of the management board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, is quoted calling the car 'a very attractive entry model at an equally attractive price,' which is his phrase and not this magazine's, and no price appears anywhere in the document. The GT 53 is the entry model of the family, and the release describes the sound program as working similar to the AMG GT 63 and GT 55 4-Door Coupe, for neither of which does this release publish figures. Nobody at this desk has heard, driven or sat in this car.
Editorial disclosure: Mercedes-Benz has been mailing this newsroom postcards from its 140 Years drive, three and four a day for five weeks, each one hand-addressed in ink to a specific staffer, each carrying one line about the weather in a city none of us has visited and no mention of an automobile, and each closing with an invitation to write back to an address in Affalterbach. Somebody in this building has been writing back. Per our strict ethical policy, we do not let this influence our coverage.
